Exploring Lake Brienz in a Hot Tug

Why book a traditional boat experience when you can float in a heated hot tub?

Lake Brienz is hands down one of the most beautiful lakes I’ve ever visited, with water that resembles blue Gatorade and iconic views in the heart of the Swiss Mountains.

We woke up at 6 am and took a train from Zurich to Interlaken for this one-of-a-kind experience. Although it was early, the train ride offered a breathtaking sunrise as we weaved through the mountains. Arriving in Interlaken, a quick connection brought us to the charming lakeside town of Brienz. Stroll through the village and you’ll discover Pirate Bay Nautical Center.

This nautical center offers everything from “hot tugs” (a floating hot tub boat, heated by a wood-burning stove), kayaks, motor boats, pedal boats, SUPs, and more. Once we arrived, we were greeted by the owner, Peter. Funny enough, he’s spent many years in my hometown, Breckenridge, which honestly reminds me a lot of these small Swiss villages.

They offer a small hut to store your luggage and change into swimsuits, with the option to rent bathrobes or towels. After you’re changed, you’ll take a short walk down to the dock.

We had an hour and a half to enjoy our hot tug on the lake, with the option to jump in the water if we wanted to, but given we visited in November, it was absolutely freezing and we passed on a polar plunge. The hot tugs accommodate up to 6 people and is heated to 38°C (100.4 °F). You can even request prosecco and snacks during your experience.

While the price tag (255 CHF, roughly $280 USD for a 3-person hot tub) leans towards the premium end, it's important to remember this is a luxurious experience in a notoriously expensive country.

If you're seeking relaxation and breathtaking winter scenery in Switzerland, this hot tub boat adventure is an absolute must-do!
